Therapy

My approach to counseling is a blend of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (challenging beliefs about actions in order to yield new results) and Solution Focused Therapy (focusing on what is working and doing more of it). I believe we are ultimately responsible for our choices but are influenced by our family, community, and childhood.

There is always a risk of psychological side effects from psychotherapy. Sometimes symptoms worsen before they get better. Often therapy brings up painful emotions. Our goal is to confront issues and emotions together, and with time, to work through them. If you could benefit from a treatment that I am not able to provide, I will help you get it. You have a right to ask me about other treatments, their risks, and their benefits. Based on what I learn about your problems, I may recommend a medical exam or psychiatric evaluation. If I do this, I will fully discuss my reasons with you, so that you can decide what is best. If another professional treats you, I will coordinate my services with them.

Length of treatment is very difficult to predict. Each individual has unique strengths and weaknesses, and each problem is different from the next. It is my goal that each client will finish therapy in a timely manner, without unnecessary waste of time or money. I will encourage you to reflect on the things that we speak about in between sessions, and be an active participant in your therapy.
